WIP

The universe in StarMade is almost infinite; it would take more than ten thousand years to go from one end to the other using normal server speed. There are many objects, AI ships and the occasional creature. It can be very hostile, but beautiful too. The possibilities for exploration truly are infinite.

Structure
The universe is made up of cubic areas, called sectors. Each sector is 2000 x 2000 x 2000 blocks. 16 x 16 x 16 sectors form a system, there are 8589934592 sectors in a galaxy. In a system there are orbital planes. There are two types: asteroid orbital planes and planet orbital planes. An orbital plane has numerous sectors assigned to it. There are two sector types that go with those orbits: asteroid and planet sectors. Planets only spawn in planet sectors. Asteroids spawn in large amounts in asteroid sectors, and if a sector isn't an asteroid sector it still has a chance to contain asteroids, but that chance is very low, and if asteroids do spawn in those sectors, they will be few in number. In systems with a star there will also will stations and shops scattered across the sectors.

There are also galaxies in StarMade. They all have the same general shape: a center with spiraling arms. Galaxies are made from star systems. Each star system has a random star color, and each star has a random name. The name of the star also is the name of that system. Further away from the galaxy center star systems get less common, until only the empty systems remain. The empty systems don't have any orbital sectors, stars or planets. There is also a third type of systems: wormhole systems. These systems only contain a wormhole, and no other structures, asteroids or planets. Wormholes are connected to other wormholes. In the map the direction of the wormhole can be determined by looking at the small arrow on the line that connects two wormholes. Stars and wormholes can be seen from multiple systems away.

Natural objects
There are eight asteroid types, and each has its own unique rock, ore and crystal type that can be used in manufacturing. There are five planet types: green (Terran) planets, yellow (desert) planets, red (burnt) planets, white (ice) planets and purple (alien) planets. Each planet type has its own unique atmosphere color. Planets are made up of segments. Segments are the shape of a pentagon, and together the twelve segments form a dodecahedron. Each segment contains two random resource types. Planets can be seen from a neighboring system. There are also blackholes (or wormholes) that can suck in unsuspecting players or unwatched ships. Players should take caution not to fall into them, which will cause you to teleport across the system.

Non-natural objects
There are three station types: shops from the Trade Guild, neutral abandoned stations and pirate stations. The shops are friendly, and they will always sell you blocks, even if the trade guild is currently at war with you. Abandoned stations contain alien creatures, and the pirate station is hostile. Pirate stations have active turrets and they will try to destroy your ship. If a pirate station is nearby, pirates will constantly send waves of ships after you. Pirate stations contain loot chests.

Terran and desert planets also have a chance to spawn structures on them. Terran planets will spawn cities and desert planets will spawn pyramids.
Sectors are regions in space where all the game play in StarMade takes place.

Overview
Sectors are the smallest units of space in the universe. They are large cube shaped areas where Players can fly, build, fight, trade, etc. Each sector is roughly 5,000 meters (configurable) on a side. Every sector is organized into a grid format surrounded in all directions by other sectors. The game will always load the adjacent sectors around you allowing you to see whats in these sectors without moving into them.

Sectors are organized into 16x16x16 blocks called Systems. Systems are larger regions of space that are organized in a similar manner as sectors. They can contain things like Solar Systems, Wormholes, or nothing at all. While systems make up the game world most are devoid of life and activity. Any life that exists will most likely be found within the many Galaxies found throughout the universe.

Types of Sectors
There are a variety of different types of sectors that you will encounter while playing the game. Some may be useful while others can be quite dangerous. It will be up to the player to deal with the situations that these sectors present you with.
Void
Void sectors are completely bereft of life and activity. These types of sectors make up most of the universe and often act as the in between space for other populated sectors. They are perfect for building space stations and ships without being disturbed. However, any nearby Pirate Stations will send ships to attack the player if they are nearby.
Space Station
Some times Space Stations will naturally spawn within sectors. These stations can be abandoned, a Trading Guild Shop, or a Pirate Station. You can see space station sectors on your universe map.
Planet
Planets take up their own unique sector and will only spawn within systems that have a star. The purple rings that can be seen around a star in the universe map usually indicates where a planet will spawn.
Asteroid Belt
Asteroids are hunks of rock that contain valuable resources. They typically spawn within their own sectors but have a chance of spawning within Space Station sectors. Asteroids have a high chance of spawning along the orange rings around stars in your universe map.
Star
Stars are hot balls of plasma that occupy the center of any star system. They are very dangerous to approach as they will slowly burn away the hull and systems of a ship (even if said ship has shields). This area of effect damage even extends to all surrounding sectors. Note that the amount of damage the star does is determined by several factors, including the color of the star and how large the approaching ship is.
Planets are large celestial objects in StarMade that populate the universe and are often used as bases of operations for players.

Overview
Planets are massive Dodecahedron shaped entities that will only spawn in star systems. Systems with purple orbits usually, but not always, indicates the existence of a planet. All planets, no matter how big, will occupy their own sector. This sector uniquely rotates around the planet in order to simulate a day and night cycle. Planetary surfaces are made up of 12 pentagonal plates. Depending on the size of the planet each plate could contain anywhere from hundred of thousands to millions of blocks. Every plate is centered around a molten core, the churning mass that keeps the planet together.

Planets come in a variety of sizes. Each is generated with a random median radius which directly determines the size of every one of its plates. This radius is displayed as an "R" followed by a set of numbers (ex. R236). You can see this on a planet's name plate by selecting the planet using the select targeted entity key. The larger the number the larger the planet. Theoretically this can be set as high as you like through the main menu, but will become much harder on performance if made larger.

Functionally planets act as pre-generated Space Stations. All station specific blocks can be placed on planets as well as allowing players to use planets as their home bases. If a player wishes to claim a planet for their faction, then they will need to place one Faction Module down on any plate and claim it. Once one plate has been claimed, all plates are claimed. If a player were to make a planet their home base, all plates will benefit from the invulnerability. Power and Shielding unfortunately do not transfer between plates.

Resources
Planets are an extremely good source of resources. When a planet spawns it will randomly pick 2 resources, either ore and/or crystal, to seed into each of its plates. Due to the massive number of blocks that compose a planet there is upwards of hundreds of thousands of units of resources depending on size. The more massive the planet the more resources it likely has. This can also stack with a factions 12x mining bonus if the player owns the star system.

Normal ship mounted salvage systems will suffice, however one should take caution when mass mining a planet. Massive mining arrays will likely harvest hundreds of blocks a second and because of this it can cause massive slow downs for the game. When massive amounts of blocks are being harvested at once the framerate can dramatically drop even to single digits depending on your computer specs.

Gravity
Planets are unique in the way that they generate their own gravity. Any entity that flies too close to a planet's surface will become trapped in its gravity well and fall into it. This gravity is generated on a per plate basis, each plate has its own gravity well that contributes to the entire planetary well.

Much like real life it is harder to escape a planets gravity then it is to enter it. The distance of a planets gravity well is based on the maximum height of its plates. The tallest plate on the planet will generate the maximum distance the gravity well extends outward. Thankfully this distance is preset when a planet generates and will not be affected by any structures that are built on the planet.

Destruction
While very difficult to do so planets can be destroyed. A planet is destroyed when its molten core has had its HP depleted. By default, all planets have 10,000,000 Hit Points but have an extremely fast healing rate. Damage is only registered if weapon fire hits the core; damage to individual plates does not count towards the planet's HP and only destroys blocks.

When the core has run out of HP then the planet will explode, causing all of its plates to be jettisoned into space. After a while each plate will slow down and become artificial "islands" in space. Even though they are no longer attached to a planet, planet plates still retain their gravitational pull. While in this state the plate effectively becomes a natural space station and can be faction claimed.

Types of Planets
*Terran Planet - Green Verdant Earth-like worlds. These planets are covered in trees and flowers while the landscape is dotted with large mountains and deep valleys.
*Red Planet - Hellish burnt worlds. These planets are very Mars-like and are covered in fungi.
*Ice Planet - Cold and lonely worlds of ice. These planets are made almost entirely out of ice and feature large plateaus with maze like valleys beneath.
*Desert Planet - Hot and dusty worlds. These planets have plates full of sand and lava lakes.
*Alien Planet - Strange and unsettling worlds. These planets see large tendril-like rock formations arching the surface. The ground appears to be made of living tissue.

Trivia
*Prior to Alpha Version 0.15, Planets were disk shaped and only consisted of one plate. It was entirely possible to fall off the side and drop completely out of the gravity of a planet.
*While molten cores may look like they are made of lava they in fact are completely safe to walk on. It is unknown if this is a bug or an intended feature.
*It is just barely possible to escape the gravity of a planet in a core.

Upcoming Features
*Moons and Rings
*Flora and Fauna
Docking is there process of attaching one star ship to other entity in StarMade. When docked ships gain various benefits such as sharing power, shielding, and even homebase invulnerability.

Overview
width="200px" height="30px"|Docking Module
style="text-align:center;"| Rail Docker
style="text-align:center;"|
Docking is an essential part of StarMade's core gameplay. Any Ship Core driven entity has the capacity to be attached to another entity be it a Space Station, Asteroid, or even another Ship. Players can also attach any number of ships on to each other creating massive chain docks. All in docking in the game requires the use of the Rail Docker and the various rail blocks. Using the Rail system players are able to not only create static docks for their ships but also fully mobile platforms. Ships docked to a rail network will move accordingly depending on the type of rail block used and its direction. Logic Signals are used to control the movement in a rail network. Docking a ship to a Faction Home base will make it completely invincible and access restricted keeping it safe while you are away.

When a ship has been successfully docked it will begin to share several vital systems with its parent entity. The Energy Supply of the parent is added to the docked entity allowing the docked ship to rely entirely on its power for things like weapons and other systems. It should also be noted that the maximum power capacity will stack for each entity as the docking chain goes deeper. The only down side to this is the fact the power generation is not shared and must be generated locally.

Shields on a docked entity and its parent entity is shared but only to a certain extent. When struck with weapon fire a docked entity will count as part of the parent entity thus draining the parent's shields first. However as long as the parent entities shields remain above 25% (configurable) then the docked ship will be completely shielded. If the Parent entity's shielding does drop below 25% then all docked entities must rely on their on-board shielding for defenses. In larger fights going after a ships turrets can be a very high priority as they are simultaneously a ships strongest and weakest points.

Static Docks and Linear Movement
width="200px" height="30px"|Docking Module
style="text-align:center;"| Rail Basic
style="text-align:center;"|
In StarMade, static docking and linear movement can both be done with a single type of block, the Rail Basic. If you wish to create a static dock where a docked ship does not move then all that is needed is to place a single Rail basic down in the desired direction and orientation. When a ship docks to this rail basic it will snap into place and in the direction that the arrow on the rail basic is facing. It is also advised that when creating static docks you make the appropriate space for it. prospective docking ships will calculate if there is enough clearance before teleporting into place. If there is no room to dock then the docking ship will receive an error message.

While docked entities will remain still when docked to a solitary Rail Basic if there is several rail basics place adjacent to each other then linear movement will occur. In rail movement a ship will slowly move across the face of a rail block. The direction in which a ship will move is determined again by the arrow on its "face". A docked ship will continue to move in a given direction so long as the rails it is moving across all point in the same direction. If a rail block happens to face a different direction then the rail entity will "hop" its tracks and change course. Through the use of logic rail movement can be manipulated in more advanced ways such as instant directional changes as well as full stops.

Rotation
height="30px" colspan="2"|Docking Module
Rail Rotator Clock Wise !! Rail Rotator Counter Clock Wise
style="text-align:center;"| ||style="text-align:center;"|
Along with linear movement the rail system also allows docked ships to be rotated in different directions. The Rail Rotator Clock Wise and Rail Rotator Counter Clock Wise blocks are both used to rotate docked entities. Other than that both blocks function identically to each other. The "face" features two sets of arrows, A large central one and a directional quarter circle one. The central arrow much like the Rail Basic determines both the docking and linear movement direction. The quarter circular arrow indicates the direction in which a rail entity will turn. When used on their own the rotators will automatically turn a docked ship in its indicated direction. If used in conjunction with Rail Basics it will first initiate its turn then move the docked ship in its linear movement direction (provided there is another rail block for it to move to).

Rotator blocks make more extensive use of logic then their rail basic cousins. If you were to connect Activation Modules to a rotator rail then you can determine the rotational degree in which that rotator will turn. The act of turn on the Activation Modules will determine the total rotational degree of the next turn. Rotational degrees can be changed in 45 degrees at a time. With 8 activated Activation Modules a rotator will do a complete 360 degree turn. Connecting a 9th Activation Module will make the next turn infinite. Use this method to create infinity spinning rail creations.
Turret Docking
Turret
width="200px" height="30px"|Docking Module
style="text-align:center;"| Rail Turret Axis
style="text-align:center;"|
Turrets can also created using docking but are less straight forward in their construction. They require the use of the Rail Turret Axis block. The Arrow on the block's "Face" only determines the docking direction and does not make a ship move at all. Once a ship has docked to a Rail Turret Axis it will have full 360 degree rotational movement, unlike Rail Rotators which require the use of logic and Activation Modules in its activation. However one docked ship will only allow for rotation on just one axis. In order to enable a turret to track targets along another axis you will need to dock another ship onto the first.

The first ship that you dock will be considered the "Base" while the second one acts as the "Barrel". The AI for turrets currently only takes advantage of two axes: The Horizontal (X-axis) and the Vertical (Y-axis). A turret will only take advantage of both axis's as long as there is one ship rotates along both axes. Whether the base or the barrel rotates along the x-axis doesn't matter as long as the other ship rotates along the y-axis. Finally the Barrel ship is the primary ship on a turret. When you activate the AI on the barrel it will control the base in order to allow more range of movement. The Barrel is also most likely where you will put all of your weapon systems. There is (Currently?) no way for the base to share weapons and systems with the barrel.
Fleets are special groupings of ships that players can designate to do a variety of tasks. One such benefit of fleets is the ability to create functioning carrier ships. These carrier ships make use of several intangible docking blocks in order to launch and recall fighters as well as moving them into their docks without physical rail contact. Fleet docking blocks are naturally invisible in flight mode and can only be seen in build mode. All fleet docking blocks are also intangible meaning that you can fly through them. However they also count as a part of your ship and can trigger shields and be destroyed like any other block.

The First of these blocks is the Pickup Rail. The pickup rail functions exactly like its physical counterpart the Rail Basic but with the added benefit of allowing docked entities to pass through it. These are mainly used to move fleet ships to their receptive docks on a carrier. They are also used in conjunction to the Pickup Point which is a unique block that acts as an auto docking point for any ship whose Rail Docker gets within 3 meters of it. They also work as a recall point for a ship's AI when in a fleet. The last fleet docking block is the Shootout Rail. This block is similar to the pickup rail but with the ability to launch docked entities from it like a real world aircraft carrier.

stub

If you wish to faction claim a planet then all you will need to do is place one Faction Module down on any plate and claim it. When only one plate has been claimed then the whole planet gets claimed. If you were to make a planet your home base, all plates will benefit from the invulnerability.

This can also stack with a factions 12x mining bonus if they own the star system.

Normal ship mounted salvage systems will suffice however one should take caution when mass mining a planet.

Much like real life its harder to escape a planets gravity then it is to enter it. The distance of a planets gravity well is based on the maximum height of its plates. The tallest plate on the planet will generate the maximum distance the gravity well extends outward. Thankfully this distance is preset when a planet generates and will not be effected by any structures that are built on the planet.

Destruction
While very difficult to do so planets can be destroyed. A planet is destroyed when its molten core has had its HP depleted. By default, all planets have 10,000,000 Hit Points but have an extremely fast healing rate. Damage is only registered if weapon fire hits the core, damage to individual plates do not count towards the planet's HP and only destroys blocks.

When the Core has run out of HP then the planet will explode causing all of its plates to be jettisoned into space. After a while each plate will slow down and become artificial islands in space. Even though they are no longer attached to a planet, planet plates still retain their gravitational pull. While in this state the plate effectively becomes a natural space station and can be faction claimed.

Types of Planets
*Terran Planet-Green Verdant Earth-like worlds. These planets are covered in trees and flowers while the landscape is dotted with large mountains and deep valleys.
*Red Planet- Hellish burnt worlds. These planets are very Mars-like and are covered in fungi.
*Ice Planet- Cold and lonely worlds of ice. These planets are made almost entirely out of ice and feature large plateaus with maze like valleys beneath.
*Desert Planet-Hot and dusty worlds. These planets have plates full of sand and lava lakes.
*Alien Planet- Strange and unsettling worlds.
